I joined the gym almost a year ago (01/2014). I was first introduced to CFWE, and CrossFit in general, by my friend and co-worker, Greg. At the time he was training pretty heavily for a competition he was participating in and I had mentioned I was in the market for a new gym. I started to ask him a few questions about it and he mentioned I should swing by to check it out and see what it is all about for myself. I was a little apprehensive at first because I wasn’t looking to join a new gym to get into a competition circuit. I was mostly looking for a new fitness routine. I had grown tired of just using the treadmill and free weights. It was boring, it felt like a chore to go to the gym, and my fitness level really plateaued.
The WOD for the first class I went to consisted of a few lifts and movements, all of which I was familiar with- deadlifts, squats, box jumps, etc. Now when I first came in to the gym I considered myself to be in pretty good shape. I was in for a rude awakening… in a good way, though. The workout was exhausting and really challenged me in a way I hadn’t been for a long time. I knew that this was exactly what I was looking for. I signed up for a 6 month membership once class was over and have since renewed it twice.
In my time at CFWE I have found out a few things. Firstly, it is a place for people at all different fitness levels. From a novice looking to have a more active lifestyle to a gym-rat, everyone can come in and partake in a workout that is definitely going to whip you into shape. I find myself looking forward to the WOD being posted so I can know what I’m taking on that day. The workouts constantly challenge me, but they are also extremely rewarding once you’ve completed them. Secondly, and this is what really separates CFWE, is the sense of community they foster there. From the owners and coaches on down to the newest members, the CFWE community is really something special. You can witness this during a workout as people push one another to reach their PR or to grind out a particularly difficult WOD. Everyone is there to better themselves, but in doing so they end up bettering one another as well.
I joined because I wanted to find a new gym and reach new heights in terms of my physical fitness. I’ve done that and more. I’ve met great people and made great friends along the way. You can’t appreciate all that CFWE has to offer unless you experience it for yourself. So do yourself a favor and try it. You will not regret the decision.
